The Comb Series is both a celebration, and a complex exploration of history, culture, and the chasm created when ancestral and cultural ties are forcibly broken. As a Black American, feeling untethered when it comes to lineage is common, the series serves as a means for reconnection. I find myself drawn to many facets across the diaspora. Hence, the artifacts I depict span the African continent.
Through this work, I imagine, I wonder what rich stories these totems carry. I mourn what I do know, I mourn what I will never know. Radial tie-dye, a practice with African roots, creates a space for a personal vibration and meditation for the viewer– where layered emotions merely become washes of color, simply existing and evolving with whom stands before it.
